This course combines the basic concepts of qualitative data analysis with the essential features of NVivo. This is the course you need if you are new to qualitative analysis and want to use NVivo from a methodological standpoint. The course is structured around five modules that follow the logical sequence of the qualitative analysis process. You will learn to relate epistemology, methodology and methods of qualitative analysis; organize a qualitative dataset in an NVivo project; differentiate approaches to coding qualitative data; seek patterns and identify relationships inductively and deductively; generate hypotheses; create second-level constructs and meta-themes; apply annotation and visualization tools to aid analysis; present qualitative findings. You will also be informed with strategies for team work and some new features that NVivo provided for simultaneous multi-user access. The course blends lectures with hands-on exercises in which the concepts seen in class are put into practice.

Course structure

This course is entirely hands-on. Participants will work with sample data to learn NVivo’s functionalities and try out the tools you’ve seen in the class with specific exercises in the practical sessions under guides. Time is also allocated to work on one’s research design and data in NVivo.

Software version

We will use NVivo 1.3 for Windows / NVivo 1.3 for Mac. The NVivo 14-day free trial for Windows and Mac can be downloaded here. Alternatively, university students or staffs may have the access to NVivo campus version via Athena login account. You must ensure your access to the software as no technical assistance will be provided during the course.

Although no previous knowledge of NVivo is required, participants should have some familiarity with qualitative research.
