Abstract

Data science is everywhere around us. Both in popular media as well in scientific publications the use of data science is ubiquitous. But what is data science? In this course we will provide an answer to that question and we will conclude that data science is in its very nature a multidisciplinary field. Aspects from statistics, computer science, software engineering, combined with necessary domain knowledge all play an important role.

We will also discuss other buzz words like “big data” and “machine learning” and see where this fits in the overall picture.

The course is taught on campus on Friday 15, 22 en 29 October. There will be a morning session, after which an exercise is given. In the afternoon the exercise will be discussed and some more theory is given. Then an elaborate exercise, to be completed in two weeks is given. The second day the exercise will be discussed in the morning session and more theory will be covered. In the afternoon session we will discuss best practices and cover questions.

The exercises will not require much domain specific knowledge and are easily understandable for people from different disciplines.

Prerequisites

In this course we take a practical, pragmatic approach towards data science and discuss the various aspects by means of hands on exercises. For these some practical knowledge of MATLAB, or Jupyter with R, or Python is required.
